Nov. 10, 2015, BUFFALO, N.Y. - Jen Mitri, manager of community initiatives at Independent Health Foundation, has been elected 2016 chair of the 33rdannual Taste of Buffalo presented by TOPS. The Taste, the nation's largest two-day food festival, is set for July 9 and 10, 2016 along Delaware Avenue and Niagara Square in downtown Buffalo.With more than twelve years of experience managing large-scale community events, Mitri is also a certified nutrition and wellness consultant. She previously held the position of Taste of Buffalo restaurant committee chair, and has been heavily involved in implementing the Independent Health Foundation's Healthy Options program into the Taste of Buffalo. 2016 will mark the tenth year of this collaboration, which requires all participating restaurants to offer a healthy item that is lower in fat, cholesterol and sodium as part of their menu offerings at the event. The Taste was the first food festival in the country to introduce a healthy requirement.
"With a background in nutrition, I understand the importance of promoting health and wellness in Western New York," said Mitri. "I have been a Taste of Buffalo volunteer for the past 10 years and I'm passionate about promoting all of the diverse culinary options that our region has to offer. This includes many healthy menu items, and the restaurants get really creative with their offerings. I've seen everything from seaweed salad to mango smoothies, and it's all been delicious!"

The Taste of Buffalo presented by Tops is the nation's largest two-day food festival, attracting more than 450,000 visitors each year. The 33rd annual Taste will take place on July 9 and 10, 2016 along Delaware Avenue and Niagara Square in downtown Buffalo. The Taste is a not-for-profit organization with more than 1,000 volunteers helping to put on the annual event. Approximately $306,000 has been raised at the festival for local charities in addition to five $1,000 scholarships awarded annually to local high school seniors pursuing a culinary or hospitality-related degree.
